Modernism, Architecture After War

Imperial Hotel in Tokyo
was created in the late 1880s at the request of the Japanese aristocracy to cater to the increasing number of western visitors to Japan

Bauhaus
A new school of thinking.  Prefabricated materials, mechanic, mechanical, robotic expression.
Long corridors- dynamism of the interior. The edges, where the ceiling and the wall meet there is a gap.  The drawings tell us that they saw the space as a fluid. There is another room seen through the door of the room depicted
They tried to communicate the ideas of a future.

space light modulator

Dumaxion House
was developed by inventor and architect Buckminster Fuller to address several perceived shortcomings with existing homebuilding techniques. Fuller designed several versions of the house at different times — all of them factory manufactured kits, assembled on site, intended to be suitable for any site or environment and to use resources efficiently. A key design consideration of the design was ease of shipment and assembly.

Villa Savoye
not enough softness and humanity to it. Looks utilitarian, but not comfortable to use.

German Pavilion Mies van der Rohe
A very simple plan. The space continues fascinate the architects and designers even nowadays.

City is verticality. City is not a landscape anymore. The sensitivity in the modern movement is very rare. Technologically sensitive environment. Despite their idea of simplicity and clear shapes, the interiors lack the human factor, somehow they concentrated on the shape, but forgot about the comfort and sometimes even functionality.

Isokon Building, Hampstead.
One of the first examples of living in a small space. Soft edge, cleverly designed space. Objects, and features fit into each other.

Frank Lloyd Wright.
Open plans, furniture build into the building. The space is well lit, huge windows.

The space - is the people. A place to co-exist.

A government created a very basic furniture. It was very cheap and simple. Utility Furniture.
For people who lost their homes, who can not afford to buy furniture, all because of war

Micro-Geometry After the Great War, Revitalised Decorative Language

Jacob Epstein

Machinery became used in everyday life and production. That was one of the leading features not he era. War machinery and development pushed the progress of the industry and people's thinking. Fashion and art deco are very tightly interconnection. Coco Chanel "Chanel for Igor" Pay attention on the Interior. Squares, little patterns are repeated. She was very playful at the interior decoration go the Rue Cambon.

The idea of a sea escape. The idea of whiteness and strong bold geometry which is still in use. Industrial aesthetic. Priority to life and health. London Art Deco Building factory - Battersea.
Eltham palace

Think about a healthy life away from the city. The shapes, geometries, became Global.
The other idea was rides around a rethinking about classic. Making classical features more cubistic, pay closer attention to how the interior space works in relation to the geometry.
Eley Kishimoto wallpaper- contemporary, but reflects the modern idea of movements.

Piet Mondrian
One of the best examples of ideas of verticality and horizontality of nature+ pure clean colour, simplification. Idea of a clear open and true living

Reshape of the body, rethinking of the body position in the room, of how the body is comforted or places in to the interior. For example you don' sit any more, but lean. The ideas of softness, curvaceous, and again, simplification.
