Modernism, Architecture After War

Imperial Hotel in Tokyo
was created in the late 1880s at the request of the Japanese aristocracy to cater to the increasing number of western visitors to Japan

Bauhaus
A new school of thinking.  Prefabricated materials, mechanic, mechanical, robotic expression.
Long corridors- dynamism of the interior. The edges, where the ceiling and the wall meet there is a gap.  The drawings tell us that they saw the space as a fluid. There is another room seen through the door of the room depicted
They tried to communicate the ideas of a future.

Dumaxion House
was developed by inventor and architect Buckminster Fuller to address several perceived shortcomings with existing homebuilding techniques. Fuller designed several versions of the house at different times — all of them factory manufactured kits, assembled on site, intended to be suitable for any site or environment and to use resources efficiently. A key design consideration of the design was ease of shipment and assembly.

Villa Savoye
not enough softness and humanity to it. Looks utilitarian, but not comfortable to use.

German Pavilion Mies van der Rohe
A very simple plan. The space continues fascinate the architects and designers even nowadays.

City is verticality. City is not a landscape anymore. The sensitivity in the modern movement is very rare. Technologically sensitive environment. Despite their idea of simplicity and clear shapes, the interiors lack the human factor, somehow they concentrated on the shape, but forgot about the comfort and sometimes even functionality.

Isokon Building, Hampstead.
One of the first examples of living in a small space. Soft edge, cleverly designed space. Objects, and features fit into each other.

Frank Lloyd Wright.
Open plans, furniture build into the building. The space is well lit, huge windows.

The space - is the people. A place to co-exist.

A government created a very basic furniture. It was very cheap and simple. Utility Furniture.
For people who lost their homes, who can not afford to buy furniture, all because of war
